Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen visited the former Soviet President at the Gorbachev Foundation in Moscow.
Broward County is the second largest county in Florida, with a major port and tourist attractions. Its hockey team includes Russian players such as the famous goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
The Mayor came to Moscow to emphasize that despite the current difficulties in relations between the United States and Russia people to people ties, commerce and cooperation in education, culture and sports should continue. We want Americans and Russians to be friends, the Mayor said.
Mikhail Gorbachev endorsed this call. Our relations are going through a rough patch, he said, but we know that people have a way of getting along. We need to create opportunities for it, and therefore I welcome your initiative.
Gorbachev inscribed for Mark Bogen his book Mikhail Gorbachev Essential Thoughts, recently published in the United States.
