A who's who of performers, including Live Aid founder Bob Geldof, turned out at a gala dinner in Britain to raise money for the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation.
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was the host for the weekend event at Hampton Court Palace to raise money for the foundation established in memory of his late wife Raisa. The foundation helps treat children with cancer in Russia.
Elton John performed for the guests, who included former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, actors Ralph Fiennes and Kim Cattrall, singer Rod Stewart, authors Tom Wolfe and J.K. Rowling and supermodel Elle Macpherson.
Gorbachev, whose wife died of leukemia in 1999, said creating a Raisa Gorbachev specialty hospital in St. Petersburg, Russia, would provide children with medical care of an international standard.
