The former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, has recommended that former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Gorbachev, who introduced 'perestroika' and 'glasnost' to the Soviet Union in the mid-1980's, wrote a letter to the Nobel committee in Oslo. He said that Kohl played a "central role in the peaceful shaping of epochal events". Gorbachev himself won the prize in 1990.
