The former USSR’s first and last president, Mikhail Gorbachev, is creating an independent social-democratic party.
“In the near future we shall make a statement we have created an independent social-democratic party,” he told the media. The initiative group has been converted into the initiative committee already, because the idea of creating such a party has met with wide popular support.
As follows from what Gorbachev said at the news conference, the new party’s program will be based on the anti-crisis initiative a group of Gorbachev Fund-friendly economists proposed sometime ago.
The former Soviet leader is certain that only a corresponding party will be able to implement these ideas.
“We have arrived at the conclusion that there must be such a party in the country,” he said.
