On 20 October 2016, the Gorbachev Foundation hosted another seminar in the Dialogues about Democracy series, co-organised by the Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Moscow Office.
The seminar was themed Civil Society and Forms of Civic Engagement in a Democracy
Active citizens are crucial to the functioning of a democratic state. What is civic engagement in practice? What are the key social, political and legal prerequisites for people to take responsibility for the well-being of society and act for its benefit? What are the types and forms of civic engagement?
Speakers at the seminar included:
Hanns-Jörg Sippel, President of Stiftung Mitarbeit (Germany), and Vyacheslav Bakhmin, independent political scientist and public figure (Russia).
The presentations were followed by a lively discussion in which Moscow-based under and postgraduate students and young researchers took part.
Co-hosting the seminar were Olga Zdravomyslova, Executive Director of the Gorbachev Foundation, and Claudia Crawford, Head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s offices in Russia.
