The XXI century will be a сentury either of total all-embracing crisis or of moral and spiritual healing that will reinvigorate humankind. It is my conviction that all of us - all reasonable political leaders, all spiritual and ideological movements, all  faiths - must help in this transition to a triumph of humanism and justice, in making the XXI century a century of a new human renaissance.

Conference “Towards a New Model of Russian Federalism" 28 - 29 June

On June 28–29, as part of the research project “Towards a New Model of Russian Federalism: The Regional Prospective”, the Gorbachev Foundation will hold the international conference “Towards a New Model of Russian Federalism”
Participants include researchers, experts, public figures and journalists.
Project  “Towards a New Model of Russian Federalism: The Regional Prospective” is based on the assumption that federalismis the most appropriate form of political organisation for Russia. At the same time we must realize that this choice is not obvious yet for the country’s people and elites, as seen from the findings of the research carried out under the project. (See and
This calls for an impartial analysis of the various factors contributing or impeding the development of federalism and federative relations in Russia as seen in various regions of the country.
The international conference, held as part of the project, will discuss the various approaches and possible solutions that might be acceptable to various territories and at the same time would consolidate Russian statehood in general, making it more effective in meeting the challenges of the country’s socio-economic and cultural development.
The aim of the conference and the project in general is not to provide some ready-made institutional solutions, but to map out approaches and ways towards а Russian model of federalism that would be supported by Russian regions and not rejected by them as something imposed from the top.
“Towards a New Model of Russian Federalism: A View from the Regions” project has been pursued in 2010-2012 under the auspices of the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies (the Gorbachev Foundation) with the support of the John D. and Catherine T. McArthur Foundation.
