The XXI century will be a сentury either of total all-embracing crisis or of moral and spiritual healing that will reinvigorate humankind. It is my conviction that all of us - all reasonable political leaders, all spiritual and ideological movements, all  faiths - must help in this transition to a triumph of humanism and justice, in making the XXI century a century of a new human renaissance.

Former Soviet leader warns of U-S-Russian tension

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev warns that tensions between the United States and Russia are reversing diplomatic gains made by both nations following the Cold War.
Gorbachev spoke to reporters Saturday before giving a speech at the Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

The former Communist Party chief and leader of the U-S-S-R says hard-liners in both countries are erasing the goodwill developed since Gorbachev effectively dismantled the Soviet Union. He says the U-S must look at Russia as a partner rather than a failed superpower.

Gorbachev didn't address U-S policy in Iraq, but says Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was a "creature of the West."
