The XXI century will be a сentury either of total all-embracing crisis or of moral and spiritual healing that will reinvigorate humankind. It is my conviction that all of us - all reasonable political leaders, all spiritual and ideological movements, all  faiths - must help in this transition to a triumph of humanism and justice, in making the XXI century a century of a new human renaissance.

Mikhail Gorbachev: Scrapping the INF Treaty makes global politics unpredictable

1 August. Interfax-Russia.ru – The termination of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty undermines the principles of strategic stability and triggers a new arms race, the former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev told Interfax.

"This move by the United States will make global politics unpredictable and its development chaotic," Mr Gorbachev said.

"The termination of the treaty will hardly be beneficial for the international community; this move undermines security not only in Europe, but in the whole world," Mr Gorbachev added.

"There still were some hopes pinned on our partners, which, unfortunately, did not materialise. I think now it is clear to everyone that a blow has been dealt to strategic security," Mr Gorbachev said.

According to the former president of the Soviet Union, who initiated the treaty and signed it in 1987 with the U.S. President Ronald Reagan, "Today we need to focus on the last pillar of global strategic security – the New START Treaty.

"Judging by statements by U.S. administration officials, its future is becoming uncertain," Mr Gorbachev said.

"If the parties have any complaints or suspicions, they should sit down at the negotiating table," the former Soviet president said.
