I am deeply saddened by Barbara’s death. On this day, I recall all that brought us together and our many meetings. Barbara did a lot for trust and friendship between us. From the very beginning, she and Raisa developed a warm relationship and they were at ease with each other. One could discuss all kinds of things with her, and we could see on many occasions that she had her own opinion and spoke her mind on important issues.
Barbara well understood the importance of what our countries were doing to overcome the heavy legacy of the cold war, and she believed that the world can be better. We were impressed by her regard for people and her commitment, in deeds and not just in words, to the universal values of peace, kindness and family.
I convey to you, George, and all yours my deep condolences. Irina and all members of my family join me in these words of sympathy.

The XXI century will be a сentury either of total all-embracing crisis or of moral and spiritual healing that will reinvigorate humankind. It is my conviction that all of us - all reasonable political leaders, all spiritual and ideological movements, all faiths - must help in this transition to a triumph of humanism and justice, in making the XXI century a century of a new human renaissance.
